Driving Safety

The Saint Louis Safety Club's main focus was safe driving. From co-hosting the annual Women's Safe Driving School to putting on events and radio shows spreading awareness, the Club worked hard to cut down on driving injuries and fatalities. Betty Baron's scrapbooks contain a mix of newspaper clippings about Club outreach and articles from other sources published between the years 1935-1975.

Driver's License Applications

This page features the front and back of two license applications, one for the State of Missouri and a renewal form for the city of St. Louis.

"Humanity's Hall of Fame"

Newspaper article about Edward N. Hines, the creator who put white lines on the road in order to provide a more structured lane division.

This article speaks on drivers' etiquette and the importance of having common sense and a cool head while driving.

"Drives Auto at Age of 106, Got First License at 95"

This short newspaper clipping talks about Jerry Patterson, a 106 year old man looking to renew his license.

William F. Yorger's Contribution

This newspaper article speaks on William F. Yorger’s building of the Careful Children’s Club and Safety Patrol. It shares how he worked to build a community of kids willing to watch out for each other and their excitement to bring forward possible safety concerns and prevention ideas. The clipping shares that roughly 482,103 young members from around the country and even in other countries worked together to bring safety to their communities.

"Safety Belt Awards"

"How Smart Is It?"

A flyer featuring a photo of a woman hit by a driver who is speeding away with the title “The Hit and Run Driver” underneath. On the back is a think piece on the recklessness and carelessness of hit and run drivers.

"Watch Out For Children"

This flyer with a photo of a little girl standing on stairs on the front contains a think piece about watching out for children when driving, especially while on vacation.

"Hurry-Up Guys"

"Physical Fitness"

This flyer asking the question “Are you physically able to operate your automobile with a reasonable assurance of safety?” contains a think piece on the back regarding reaction times and some of the physical weaknesses that lead to fatal accidents.

"Happy Vacation"

Asking the question “Will your vacation last two weeks – or eternity?” speaks about the dangers that can arise while driving to and during vacation. The artwork on the front shows a variety of morbid imagery aiming to scare the reckless driver straight.

"Driving Fatigue"

A flyer showing a tense driver with script urging the fatigued driver to “stop and rest” contains a think piece on the back about driving while fatigued and the way it affects the driver.

"Highway Courtesy"

With artwork of a man shielding his eyes from bright headlights, this flyer speaks on the importance of dimming headlights for oncoming traffic and other courteous actions that make driving safer for everyone.

"Driver Responsibility"

A flyer showing different motorists of land, sea, and air with a think piece on the back about responsibilities these motorists hold and how auto drivers should adopt them.
