MSSU Archives & Special Collections Exhibits: Building the Competition

Digital exhibits created by the MSSU Archives and Special Collections department.

Building The Competition

Building an internationally recognized competition takes a lot of work. In an interview done with Carthage Press in October of 2008, Mrs. Vivian León mentions it took $450,000 to put on the Missouri Southern International Piano Competition and required someone focusing solely on the event 24/7 for the desired results. In 2007, the MSIPC planning committee sent out 15,000 applications for 2008’s competition alone. There’s no telling just how many were sent out over the competition’s lifespan. Mrs. León ran the competition with 3 paid staff members and a handful of dedicated volunteers relying on fundraising and community support to raise the necessary funds.

This section contains donation request cards, competition applications, publication requests, and newspaper releases used to help raise funds and build community support for the competition.
