Dolph Shaner - Local Community
Shaner was very involved with the community past his work with the Historical Society and Rotary Club. This was through his connection with other clubs and organizations as well as his realty business. On this page are articles, letters, and other documents that show Shaner's involvement with his local community.
Shaner gave an address at a banquet of the Joplin Improvement Club where he discussed how Joplin moved from a mining camp with a rough reputation to a more developed city.
Shaner delivered a paper at a Rotary club meeting talking about the improvement and expansion of Joplin.
A letter from the State Historical Society of Missouri asking Shaner for a recommendation about a marker inscription to be placed at a Joplin highway. This inscription is meant to give a tourist needed information about the area.
Shaner petitions for a name change claiming that having a German name, while the US was at war with Germany, was making it difficult for him to do business.
Adolph Schoenherr was granted a decree to change his name to Dolph Shaner to prove he was truly American and to distance himself from his German sounding name.
Smileage books are coupon books bought by soldiers that can be used to buy entertainment. Shaner, as chairman of the Joplin entertainment council, helped put forth these books in the Joplin area.
Shaner, in a rotary club newsletter, puts forth the idea of the rotary club protecting the trees of the city, claiming the trees and natural landscape are what sets Joplin apart as a city.
Billboard was placed on highway from Joplin to Oakland in order to advertise Shaner’s Realty business in the Ozarks. This was during a peak time of advertising for tourism and reality in this area.
Forty acres of land on the northwest corner of Range Line was bought by Shaner who will use the land to build many homes.
President of the Ozark Playgrounds Association presides a luncheon that is given for bankers and real estate men. One speaker is Shaner, as the president of the Real estate Board of Joplin.

The Carthage Pathfinder club is a civic club for young businessmen of each industry to preform civic work and to further develop together. Shaner spoke at the meeting installing the club and is noted as being an advisor to the Joplin club.

Shaner, in addition to his historical writing, also created creative writing. 'Come to Joplin' is one example of his writing that ties into the local community.
