MSSU Archives & Special Collections Exhibits: Brick By Brick, a Campus Emerged

Digital exhibits created by the MSSU Archives and Special Collections department.

Brick By Brick, a Campus Emerged

Originally, whenever Missouri Southern State University was Joplin Junior College, the institution did not have a campus and was housed within the Joplin High School. Since then, it has been a long and rewarding journey. In 1967, MSSU was able to acquire 320 acres of land for the campus, and with great aid from the community, has built the majority of its present structures from then on.

Campus Aerial, mid-late 1960s

A campus aerial depicting MSSU's campus, likely around the purchase of the Wallower estate, in the mid-late 1960s. Timeframe is determined via the absence of all post-Wallower buiildings. Interesting features of note are the presence of the olympic pool and the pasture to the left-center of this image. Towards the bottom-right of this photo, a Wallower building is shown; similar to the size and shape of what is now the Kuhn Annex. This indicates that the structure was likely moved after MSSU purchased the property
