On January 2, 1942 Fred Hughes married Miss Rebekah Blair of Joplin. Miss Blair was the Daughter of Clay Cowgill Blair of Joplin and Miss Rebekah Harris of Columbia. Mrs. Rebekah (Becky) Blair Hughes was a graduate of the University of Missouri Journalism School, which is where Hughes first met her. They had two daughters Sallie Elizabeth Hughes Taylor (who married Gregory Hobbs Taylor) and Mary Jane Hughes.
