ebrary: Downloading FAQs

Your guide to ebrary - how to access ebooks, search, highlight and take notes within an ebook, add an ebook to your ebrary bookshelf, cite ebrary books, and share ebooks with persistent links

I tried to download an entire document and it wouldn’t let me. Why not?

When you request to download an entire document (via Adobe Digital Editions), ebrary checks whether the document is allowed to be full-document downloaded.  If it is not, you are informed at that point.

There are typically two reasons a document might be disallowed for full-document download:

  1. The document is single-user-only (and your ebrary site has the default setting that single-user-only documents are disallowed for full-document download).
Options:  Your librarian might consider buying additional single-user-only copies of the document, converting it to multi-user (if available), or changing the default to allow full-document downloading of single-user-only documents.
  2. The document is provided by a publisher that does not allow full-document downloading. See the following link for a complete list:

I downloaded an e-book but didn’t open it immediately with Adobe Digital Editions. How do I find the file?

When you download a product from Adobe.com, your browser, the Akamai Download Manager, or the Adobe Download Assistant prompts you to choose a location to save the software. If you cannot remember where you saved the files, try the following solutions.

Check the browser's download location

Check the location where your browser automatically saves downloaded files:

  • Internet Explorer (Windows): C:\...[user name]\My Documents\Downloads
  • Firefox: Choose Firefox > Preferences (Mac OS) or Tools > Options (Windows). In the General tab, look in the Downloads area. Check the setting Save Files To to see the download location.
  • Safari (Mac OS): Choose Safari > Preferences. In the General tab, check the setting Save Downloaded Files To.
  • Google Chrome: Choose Customize and Control Google Chrome>Options. In the Under The Hood tab, look under the Downloads heading. Check the Download location setting.

Check the Downloads window (Firefox, Safari, Chrome)

Firefox and Safari track the progress of files they download. If Firefox or Safari managed the download (not Akami or Adobe Download Assistant), check the Downloads window for the location of your downloaded files.

  • Firefox: Choose Tools > Downloads or press Ctrl+J (Windows) or Command+J (Mac OS). Right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Mac OS) the downloaded file and choose Open Containing Folder (Windows) or Show In Finder (Mac OS).
  • Safari (Mac OS): Choose Window > Downloads or press Option+Command+L. Control-click the downloaded file and choose Show In Finder.
  • Google Chrome: Choose Customize and Control Google Chrome>Downloads or press Ctrl+J. Click the Show in folder link under the downloaded file.

Search your hard disk

  • Search your hard disks for the downloaded files using either of the following criteria:
    • Files modified on the date that you downloaded.
    • If you downloaded a CS5 application, search for files that contain "CS5." On Windows, you can add wildcards by searching for "*CS5*."

For assistance with searching your hard disk, see the Help files for your operating system.

If you can't find your downloaded file, try the download again.

How do I return an ebook?

Ebrary documents downloaded with Adobe Digital Editions automatically expire at the end of the loan period and are rendered unusable at that time.

To return an e-book early:

  1. In Adobe Digital Editions, click on the arrow icon on the title you wish to return early.
  2. Select Return Borrowed Item.
  3. Click OK.
  4. You may also wish to Delete Item by clicking on the same arrow.

I’ve returned an e-book. Why can’t I download another one?

You can download a maximum of 10 complete documents at a time.

When you return a downloaded document, it may take up to 10 minutes for the return to be processed before you may download another one.

What is Adobe Digital Editions?

Adobe Digital Editions is a free software program that is required to download entire e-books from ebrary.  It handles the digital rights management (DRM) for the downloaded e-book; it monitors the download-time-period and causes the downloaded e-book to become unreadable after the indicated time period.

Adobe Digital Editions also offers user tools for working with your downloaded e-book:

  • Transfer e-books to your mobile devices (but not a Kindle - SEE: ebrary books on Kindle for instructions using the Aldiko reader)
  • Organize and navigate your library of e-books
  • Return an e-book early
  • Search text within an e-book
  • Annotate and highlight an e-book (won’t be synced with ebrary bookshelf)
  • Create bookmarks into an e-book
  • Print up to 25% of an ebook

How do I install Adobe Digital Editons?

To install Adobe Digital Editions, please select from the following:

Windows 7, Vista, XP
Mac OS X

If you experience problems, please see the Adobe Digital Editions help page.

What is an Adobe ID? Do I need one?

You don’t need an Adobe ID to download e-books from ebrary.

However, creating an Adobe ID is free, and you will need one to transfer downloaded files between your computer and e-readers or other devices.

What can I do with my downloaded e-book?

With Adobe Digital Editions, you can use your downloaded e-book in a number of ways:

  • Check out and return downloaded documents
  • Organize your library of downloaded documents
  • Transfer downloaded documents to other devices including your iPhone, iPad, Kobo, Nook, Sony Reader, or others but NOT a Kindle.
  • Navigate your library of downloaded documents
  • Search text within a downloaded document
  • Annotate and highlight a downloaded document (but these won’t be synced with ebrary’s online bookshelf)
  • Create bookmarks into a downloaded document
  • Print a downloaded document

Why can I download some e-books, but not others?

 It may be that:

  • You have reached the maximum number of entire-document downloads allowed per patron (10). In order to check out another e-book, you would first need to return one
  • The ebook allows only single user permissions, and has therefore been restricted from being downloaded
  • All available copies are in use by other patrons (either online use or have been downloaded)

*most of Spiva Library's ebrary books have multi-user permissions and therefore are not restricted from being downloaded even when being viewed or downloaded by other users.
