Student Worker Training: Emergency Procedures

Guide for training of Library student workers

Emergency Weather Conditions

Occasionally the University is closed due to emergency weather conditions. Whenever the University closes for inclement or severe weather the Library will close as well.

Employees are expected to be at work unless campus is officially closed. Cancelation of classes does not mean that the Library is closed. Employees must receive confirmation that the offices are closed.

Employees are expected to communicate with their supervisor regarding absence or tardiness due to weather conditions. Time missed from work must be reported as vacation leave or made up within the work week.

Campus is considered closed from the time of the announcement until 11:59 p.m. unless campus is reopened for classes in the afternoon or evening.

If inclement or severe weather causes the cancellation of classes or programs at Missouri Southern State University, students, faculty, staff, vendors, and visitors should check the following sources for announcements:

  • The University’s main Web home page (www.mssu.edu);
  • LioNet (sungard76.mssu.edu/cas/login?service=https%3A%2F%2Flionet.mssu.edu%2Fc%2Fportal%2Flogin; students, faculty, and staff will need their ID and password for LioNet);
  • The University's Facebook page (www.facebook.com/mssulions);
  • A recorded message at the main Library phone number (417-625-9386);
  • Local and regional radio stations, including 88.7KXMS/Fine Arts Radio International; radio stations in Joplin, Aurora, Carthage, Miami, Monett, Neosho, Nevada, Pittsburg, Springfield; and stations in Northwest Arkansas;
  • Joplin TV stations: KSN (www.fourstateshomepage.com), KODE, KOAM (www.koamtv.com), and FOX 14 (www.fox14tv.com) and their respective websites (links included; KSN and KODE share a website);
  • Web news services at Joplin Globe (www.joplinglobe.com) and Joplin Independent (www.joplinindependent.com).

Closings will be posted to the Library Facebook page (www.facebook.com/spivalibrary) as soon as official word is received from University Administration.

Emergencies

In the event of an emergency or major crime on campus, notify Campus Police by calling the emergency number, 911

For medical emergencies or accidents involving students, employees, or visitors, contact the Campus Police officer on duty at 911. Campus Police officers responding to the scene will render temporary medical assistance and will take a Medical Emergency/Accident Report. Under NO circumstances should you transport someone to the hospital emergency room.

For non-emergencies call 3131 for JPD communications.

All employees – including student assistants – are expected to report any medical or accident incident to Campus Police regardless of the severity.

Should a person refuse first aid or assistance, the following information should be requested:
